Hello I’m Doctor Heather Moore owner of
Total Performance Physical Therapy. Today we’re going to go through a few things that
you can do to reduce headaches most often headaches that we see and treat in our clinic
are caused by increased muscle tension, meaning that you’re shoulders are generally up here
or you’re a very tense person this causes painful almost debilitating headaches sometimes
while there are exercises that can be done to reduce some of these the most important
thing Is to concentrate on your posture you can, there can no exercises that can help
you that posture all day long so some of the main points that you need to look at when
you consider your posture are where are your shoulders, when you have a lot of headaches
you’re going to have your shoulders up in to your ears and you’re not going to realize
it alright so you need to have people kinda remind you, tell you one of the things you
can do is roll your shoulders up back and drop them down, this is what they normally
said you might want to do this quite often during the day as you have trained your muscles
as to be up in this posture instead of down and relax where they should be in order to
retrain your muscles to be at this length and not this length you’re going to have
to remind them on a consistent basis to stay down. Once you recognize this trait in yourself
you’ll be able to realize how often your shoulders are like this having your shoulders
up like this will cause shortening of the muscles in through your neck in through the
back of your neck and in through actually the front of your neck and all of this will
cause pulling of the head which will then increase your intensity for headaches, another
issue that we often see when dealing with headaches is improper computer posture so
generally what will happen is you have forward head and rounded shoulders so you’ll be
sitting in something like this all day, now if it’s a laptop or depending on if it’s
a desktop or not you can just be sitting something like this, all you’re doing is increasing
pressure through here and through here and not even realizing it. One of the things you
can do is to set a reminder on your computer to check your posture every 15 minutes it’s
very easy as you get involve in a task group projectto continue to slob in to this sort
of posture, what you want to do is you want to again pull your shoulders back up and back
them down. One of the other things that you can do if you find yourself slob in that posture
quite often is you want to do what we call a chin tuck and all you want to do is bring
your head back and let it come forward, to find a happy medium from where your neck and
breath should rest during the day, you want to push your neck as far forward as you can
and push it all the way back and go about 50% in the middle, that’s where your neck
should sit all day. The biggest component in helping you get through headaches is identifying
the problem;it’s identifying the postures that are causing the headaches and then making,
taking steps to make sure that you reduce those postures this is a very long process
because it took a lot for your muscles to remember to be up here and here so it will
take a while to reverse but once you identify the fact that you have this issues and your
posture is not correct, you can take the correct steps to help yourself get over these headaches.
